NAB 2006: The Mac Roundup
by Dave Nagel
Based on preliminary numbers, this year's convention of the National Association of Broadcasters, held this week in Las Vegas, drew in some 105,000 attendees, making it the largest showcase for new Mac gear in the last several years. And once again, the Mac took center stage at the show. Unlike some of the recent NAB conventions, NAB 2006 didn't offer up a huge number of new Mac product announcements, but it did serve as a launch vehicle for some significant ones, from Apple as well as third-party hardware and software developers. ...Read More »
Direct to Disk Recorders
by Stephen Schleicher
The biggest problem for editors is digitizing all of the footage from tape. Not only does an editor need to log the tape, but the digitizing takes place in real time. In a fast paced edit bay, this can slow post production to a crawl. One solution is to have all of the footage shot in the format you need direct to disk. Three companies announced their solution at the National Association of Broadcasters convention this week. ...Read More »

Targus Tornado Notebook Chill Pad
Is your laptop too hot for your lap? The Targus Tornado Notebook Chill Pad is a cooling pad for notebook PCs with two built-in fans for fast heat dissipation. Powered by the notebook’s USB port, the company claims it will move 28 cubic feet of air per minute. Might be perfect for those Boxx laptop users.
Merrell Mandini Sandals
Summer is coming, and it's time to strap on some Merrell Mandini sandals, giving you that same air-cushioned midsole that we've grown to love with Merrell shoes. Make them fit just right with their three-way adjustable closures, and then there's that open-air sandal goodness that's oh-so-great for summertime. We like them in dark taupe, they're $90.
Gyrobike Flywheel
Forget training wheels, the Gyrobike has a gyroscope built into the front wheel that automatically compensates for a beginner's wobble to keep them upright. Expected to sell for $40, but I hear the company is in talks with bike manufacturers to have them pre-installed on new models.
ColorWare Customized MacBook Pro
Now you can get a MacBook Pro in a spectacular lineup of colors, where ColorWare takes a regulation 15-inch MacBook Pro and gussies it up in your choice of 24 colors. It's $3149 for the 2GHz model, so you'd better really like that color you picked out. I'm partial to the red one. It takes two or three weeks to order from ColorWare, and the new 17-inch MacBook Pro isn't available yet. I think I'll load Windows XP on mine.
USB Air Purifier
I don’t know why anyone in your office would be smoking around computers, but if you need to clean the air in your office, check out the USB Air Purifier. Plugs into your USB port and cleans the air while you work. Perfect for smoke, dust, and those evil germs that are keeping you from getting your work done.
PQI U510 Flash Drive
Here's the slimmest flash drive in the world, and get this -- it's just 3mm thick! It's about the size of a credit card, perfect for slipping into your wallet with its built-in retractable USB connector. Here's the kicker: it holds 16GB of data. Not available yet, but when it is, sign me up.
