EXPERIMENT: City Tour (looping footage)

It was such a nice day on Saturday, that my son and I went out to have some fun with my GoPro HD camera. If you haven’t heard of, or seen, one of these cameras, it is a super small, and lightweight camera that is designed to attached to helmets, bikes, motorcycles, skateboards, and anything else you can think of.

Designed for extreme sport coverage, these little camera’s pack quite a punch when it comes to capturing intense action in high definition. That’s right, this camera captures HD! So what did we do with it? Attached it to the front of the car, and took a little trip.

Lately, if you haven’t noticed, I’ve been doing a lot of time lapse photography. While these have been mostly involving nature, this time I thought it might be interesting to see if I could create a looping animation of a high-speed driving tour of our little town. I mounted the GoPro Hero to the hood of the car, and drove a loop around part of the city. Careful placement of the edit point, and I ended up with a piece that does indeed loop seamlessly when put in a timeline.

It’s a little different, and something that did turn out the way I wanted it to. If this is something that you might want to use in a project, I have it available as part of my FREE STOCK FOOTAGE COLLECTION

As always, you may use the footage for any project – that includes feature film, broadcast television, commercial work, indie project, etc. without having to pay a fee. The only thing I ask is you a) do not redistribute the footage as part of a stock footage library, b) please contact me with the project you used the shot in, and c) list me in any credits for the project.

I would also ask that you send a copy of the completed project to me for my records.

Other than that – go to town and have fun. Don’t forget, I also have several other free video clips for you to use.

If you liked this clip, and are feeling generous, I appreciate any donations.

Stephen Schleicher is one of those guys that has always loved comics but never got into them until really late in life - like high school in the 80s. He just missed the Crisis on Infinite Earths, but has been around for every major crossover since. Stephen knows his way around video and film production having been a director, producer, editor, and motion graphics artist for projects ranging from small promotional pieces for Wachovia all the way up to regional videos for the Division of Emergency Management. As a prolific writer, Stephen began his career writing for the Digital Media Online community of sites, including Digital Producer and Creative Mac covering all aspects of the digital content creation industry. He then moved on to consumer technology, and began the Coolness Roundup podcast. A writing fool, Stephen also freelances for the Sci-Fi Channel's Technology Blog. When not writing, Stephen shares his knowledge as a tenured faculty member at Fort Hays State University. Still longing for the good ol' days, Stephen launched Major Spoilers in July 2006, because he is a glutton for punishment.
